SB: Hofstra Starts NCAA Regional Play On Friday

Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Softball program will open play in the NCAA Regionals on Friday when the Pride takes on Oregon State at 4 p.m. Eastern time at Missouri's University Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with live audio also available through 88.7 FM and through Pride Zone.

Hofstra (43-11) was placed in the Columbia Regional, where No. 6 overall seed Mizzou (35-11) will face Stony Brook (35-23) in the second game of the night on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with that contest also on ESPN3.

The Pride will be making their 14th NCAA Tournament appearance after earning an automatic berth by capturing the Colonial Athletic Association championship for the 10th time in 12 seasons on Friday. Under head coach Bill Edwards, Hofstra will enter Columbia, Mo. with a 13-game winning streak and wins in 40 of the last 43 games.

Edwards' team won a NCAA Regional for the first time in program history in 2012, advancing to the Super Regionals and finishing just one win shy of reaching the Women's College World Series.  Now, Hofstra will attempt to make a similar run that starts with facing an Oregon State team that is 33-22 and finished 8-16 in the Pac-12. The Beavers have lost five of their last six, though that victory came in a 3-2 win at home against NCAA Tournament qualifier UCLA.

Mizzou is ranked eighth in the latest NFCA poll and is coming off a deep run in the SEC Tournament that saw the Tigers fall to No. 3 Florida, 10-4, in the championship game.

Stony Brook is coming off an America East Tournament championship with two wins on Saturday against top-seeded Albany. The Seawolves overcame three elimination games on the week and will be making its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2008.

Hofstra defeated James Madison twice in two days en route to the CAA Tournament title, though the Dukes earned an at-large bid and will play in the Knoxville Regional. It marks first time in the 11 years of the conference history that two teams have advanced to the postseason softball tournament.
