Hempstead, NY - Andreana Thomas' three-pointer with the shot clock expiring snapped a 47-all tie and keyed a 10-0 run as Hofstra claimed the 2012 New York Life Holiday Invitational with a 63-54 win over Northwestern Sunday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex. The Pride claimed their second New York Life Holiday Invitational in as many years with the win.
The victory, Hofstra's second in a row over a power conference (following a 72-63 win over the SEC's Ole Miss on Friday) improved the Pride's record to 3-7. Northwestern slipped to 7-5 on the season.
Thomas finished with 14 points and six assists, while Shante Evans led all scorers with a season-high 26 points. Evans also had 14 rebounds. Anma Onyeuku was also in double-figures with 13 points.
Northwestern was led by Danielle Diamant's 16 points and eight rebounds, while Karly Roser had 14 points and Kendall Hackney added 10 points.
Defense played a big part in the win as well as the Pride forced 27 turnovers that led to 19 points.
The first half was all Hofstra as the Pride led for the majority, following a 2-2 tie in the early stages of the game. Evans gave the Pride the lead, 4-2, with a jumper in the paint at the 17:33 mark. That basket ignited a 16-4 run for Hofstra that resulted in an 18-6 lead with 11:54 to go in the half. Evans had nine points in the spurt, while Thomas added five points and two assists.
The Wildcats responded with a 7-3 outburst to pull within eight, 21-13, with 7:48 to go in the half as Hackney recorded all seven points for Northwestern. But the Wildcats would not get closer the rest of the way as the two teams both scored 10 points each with Hofstra holding a 31-23 lead at intermission.
Northwestern chipped away at the Pride lead in the second half, outscoring Hofstra 22-14 over the first 13:05 to tie the game at 45 on Diamant's jumper with 6:55 to play. The team traded baskets over the next 40 seconds and with the score knotted at 47, Hofstra had possession and Thomas took a pass on the left wing and the sophomore point guard hit a long three-pointer as the shot clock buzzer sounded to put the Pride ahead for good. The Wildcats would not get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Hofstra returns to action after the holiday break, hosting Norfolk State at the Mack Sports Complex on January 3.
