Joining Moore in double-figures for Hofstra was senior forward Nathaniel Lester with 21 points, junior forward David Imes with a season-high 16 points and senior guard Dwan McMillan with 10 points. Imes also added 15 rebounds and four steals, while McMillan had nine assists and Lester added 10 boards.
Iona (10-3) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. The Gaels were led by Mike Glover's 20 points and 13 rebounds. Momo Jones also chipped in 20 points in the losing effort.
The Hofstra defense held Iona to nearly 11 points below its season scoring average. The Gaels entered the night averaging 85.9 points per game, which ranks fourth in the NCAA. Iona was also ranked fourth in the latest Collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Poll. Hofstra's win also snapped a two-game losing streak in the series with Iona and evened the all-time mark between the two schools at 20-20.
Hofstra led by as many as 19 points in the second half on three separate occasions before the Gaels made a late run to cut the deficit to seven, 64-57, with 7:46 to go on a Taaj Ridley layup. Hofstra would go up by as many as 11 on four different occasions, while Iona would not get closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Pride led the majority of the contest, snapping a 22-22 tie with a 6-0 run in the first half. Imes started the run with a jumper in the paint at the 8:09 mark and Moore scored off a steal on the ensuing inbounds. Then after another Iona turnover in the offensive end, McMillan found Moore for a breakaway layup to give the Pride a 28-22 lead at the 7:12 mark.
The Pride would extend to a 39-25 lead at the 3:51 mark on a jumper by Imes. The basket capped an 8-0 run for Hofstra that also included baskets by freshman forward Moussa Kone, McMillan and sophomore guard Shemiye McLendon. Hofstra would manage just one field goal (a Moore three-pointer) and a free throw the rest of the way, but its defense would lock down on the Gaels, holding the high-scoring Iona offense to just three free throws in that span as well. Hofstra also took advantage of Iona's aggressive style of play, drawing three charges in the final three minutes as it took a 43-28 lead at the half. The Pride also forced the Gael's into 18 first half turnovers.
Moore paced the Pride with 12 points in the half, while Imes added 10 points. Glover scored nine first half points to lead the Gaels in the opening 20 minutes.
The Pride return to action this Monday, January 2, when they host Virginia Commonwealth in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at the Mack Sports Complex. Tip is set for 7 p.m. The game concludes a season-high five-game homestand for the Pride.
