College Park, MD- Maryland's Matt Marquis hit a three-run home run and collected four total RBIs while Brett Harman allowed three runs in eight innings as Hofstra dropped a 10-3 decision to the Terps on Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field.
Hofstra senior Ethan Paquette (West Burke, VT) hit a ninth-inning solo home run but Hofstra still fell to 0-8. Alfredo Rodriguez belted three RBIs in improving Maryland's ledger to 4-6.
Harman (1-2) scattered seven hits and struck out nine against one walk. The Terps compiled eight stolen bases in winning the first two of a three-game set.
Maryland tagged four runs off freshman starter Jared Rogers (Flemington, NJ) in the fourth to open a scoreless game. The Terps worked a leadoff double and followed a sacrifice bunt with a walk to put runners on the corners. Rodriguez's lined a full-count RBI single to left and Marquis blasted a three-run home run to left as the Terps collected three consecutive extra-base hits.
Rodriguez added another clutch hit in the third. The shortstop hit a clutch two-out single up the middle to score David Poutier and Matthew Murakami for a 6-0 Terps lead. Rodriguez's second hit chased Rogers (0-3) after the right-hander gave up six runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Hofstra first scored off Harman in the fifth inning. Centerfielder John Kenny (Franklin Square, NY) hit a leadoff triple and scored on Hagburg's RBI groundout. Kenny finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Maryland added an insurance run in the fifth and sixth innings off freshman southpaw Joe Burg (Lindenhurst, IL). Freshman John Krause (Wantagh, NY) pitched the eighth and allowed two more Maryland runs.
The Pride will turn to junior right-hander Kevin Rigopoulos (Athol, MA) to salvage the three-game series finale on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
