Hempstead, NY - One
current student-athlete and three former Hofstra field hockey alums are
competing in the 2010 Pan American Hockey Federation Central American and
Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Sophomore Krizia
Layne, who played in 20 games and started 18 for the Pride in 2009, is a member
of the Trinidad and Tobago national team along with Hofstra alumni Kristin
Thompson '10 and Sekayi Liburd '06. Charlia Warner, a 2009 graduate of Hofstra,
is a member of the National Team of Barbados. All four players have played in
all three of their Pool "A" games with Layne scoring in a 5-1 victory over
Guyana and Thompson notching goals in the win over Guyana and a 4-0 win over
Bermuda. Layne, who tallied three goals and two assists for Hofstra last
season, also represented Trinidad and Tobago in the 2009 Pan American Cup.
Trinidad and Tobago
finishing first in the pool with a 3-0 record (9 points). Barbados placed second
in pool play with a 1-1-1 mark and four points. Both teams have advanced to the
semifinals on Wednesday with Trinidad and Tobago facing the Dominican Republic
(2-1), second in Pool "B" at 2 p.m., and Barbados facing Mexico (3-0), the top
team in Pool "B", at 4:30 p.m. The semifinal winners will meet for the CAC
Games championship on Friday, July 30 at 4:30 p.m.
The first and second
place countries in the CAC Games will qualify for the XVI Pan American Games to
be held in Guadalajara, Mexico in October 2011. Mexico, as host, will automatically
qualify for the 2011 Pan Am Games. Should Mexico finish first or second in the
CAC Games this week, the third-place team will also advance to the Pan Am Games
next year.
The 2010 Hofstra
Field Hockey season begins on Saturday, August 28 against Boston University at
the Capital Land Classic at the University at Albany.
