Lawrenceville, NJ - Hofstra senior P.J. Gillespie has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Wrestler of the Month for all competition fromNovember 30 to December 19, the CAA announced today. Gillespie shares the award with Donnie Vinson of Binghamton University.


Gillespie, a 165-pound senior from Long Beach, New York, finished runner-up at the prestigious Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational, losing 4-2 to Wyoming's third-ranked wrestler in the nation, Shane Onufer. Gillespie went 5-1 last month to improve to 11-1 on the season. He is now ranked third by InterMat, fourth by W.I.N. Magazine and fifth by Amateur Wrestling News.


Vinson, a 149-pound junior, was runner-up at the Penn State Open and placed fourth at the Reno Tournament of Champions, winning 10 of 12 matches. His only losses came to the top and fifth ranked wrestlers in the nation. Vinson picked up three majors, a tech fall and a pair of pins in his last 10 wins and moved up to sixth in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, seventh by InterMat and ninth by W.I.N.


Derak Heyman of Binghamton was named the CAA Rookie of the Month. Heyman, a 141-pound freshman, placed eighth at the Penn State Open, winning four matches on the day.


In related news, four Pride wrestlers are ranked number one in their respective weight classes in this week's CAA rankings. Junior Steve Bonanno (Wantagh, NY), who is 9-2 at 125 pounds, sophomore Luke Vaith (Hastings, MN), who is 7-3 at 141 pounds, Gillespie, who is 11-1 at 165, and senior Ben Clymer (Germansville, PA), who is 8-3 at 184 pounds, are all ranked first in their weight classes. In addition, sophomore Jamie Franco (Monroe, NY) is ranked second at 133-pounds with a 7-5 record while junior Tyler Banks (Griswold, CT) is ranked third at 157 pounds with a 5-5 mark and classmate Paul Snyder (Greensburg, PA) is third at 285 pounds with an 8-3 record.
