Salem, VA - Hofstra junior Russ Benner led 14 Pride wrestlers at the 2012 Hokie Open at the Salem Civic Center Sunday. Senior Matt Spataro and red-shirt sophomore Zeal McGrew posted 3-2 marks in the open tournament to follow Benner. All Hofstra grapplers wrestled unattached Sunday.

Benner, a native of Roselle Park, NJ and a transfer from Appalachian State University, posted a 4-2 mark at 157 pounds in his Hofstra debut. He posted a 5-3 win over Seiji Borja from Newberry in the opening round before dropping a 5-2 decision to Gardner Webb's Alex Medved. He then rattled off three consecutive wins in the consolations, pinning Washington and Lee's Dan Igel in 1:44, topping North Carolina's Ryan Harrington, 6-2 and The Citadel's Matt Frisch, 8-3 before Duke's Immanuel Kerr-Brown ended Benner's tournament with a 6-2 decision in the fifth round of the consolations.

Spataro, a native of Garfield, NJ, posted a 3-2 record at 149 pounds. He opened with a 3-1 loss to North Carolina's Christian Barber before recorded a 12-2 major decision over Shane Lee from The Citadel, a 13-1 major decision over Caleb Swinson from Appalachian State and a 3-1 win over Ryan Medved from Gardener Webb. Virginia Tech's Chad Strube stopped Spataro by pin at the 4:50 mark in the fourth round of the consolations.

McGrew, a native of Glenville, NY, was 3-2 at 285 pounds. He opened with a 3-1 win over North Carolina State's Mike Kosoy before being pinned by Odie Delaney from The Citadel at the 0:35 mark. McGrew then posted consolation victories over Washington and Lee's Grant Cokeley (12-5) and Newberry's Matt Wade (11-7). He was edged by Virginia Tech's Ty Walz, 3-1.

Two Hofstra wrestlers posted 2-2 records at the Hokie Open as freshman Jamel Hudson (Bay Shore, NY) was 2-2 at 141 pounds while classmate Jay Lysne (Lakeview, OR) was 2-2 at 157 pounds. Hudson opened with a 8-6 loss to Chattanooga's Dean Pavlou before defeating North Carolina's Cody Ross, 9-3 and posting a major decision over Chattanooga's Landon Reed, 10-1. Hudson was eliminated by Duke's Tanner Hough, 9-7.  Lysne opened with a 2-0 win over Davis Bagwell from Newberry before being pinned by Rutgers' Scott Winston at the 2:50 mark. He then defeated Rutgers' Mike Simmons, 9-3 before being pinned by Virginia Tech's Matt Stephens at the 1:55 mark.

Red-shirt sophomore Cody Ruggirello (Walden, NY) posted a 1-2 record at 149 pounds as did freshmen Jahlani Callender (North Lauderdale, FL) in the same weight class and Jimmy Trull (Bellevue, WA) at 285.

Six other Pride freshman wrestlers went winless at the Hokie Open. Cory Goshkagarian (Somerset, NJ) and Corey Jacobs (Salem, NH) were 0-2 at 149 pounds, Dalton Ahern (Old Saybrook, CT) and Michael Caputo (Stony Point, NY) were 0-2 at 157 pounds, Dan Spurgeon (North Massapequa, NY) was 0-2 at 165 pounds and red-shirt freshman David Heitman (Mahwah, NJ) was 0-2 at 174 pounds.

Hofstra begins its 2012-13 regular season this Friday, November 9 at third-ranked Minnesota. Match time is 8 p.m. (ET).
