Hempstead, NY - Seven Hofstra runners will head north for the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championship Northeast Regional on Friday, November 9 at Hammonassett State Park in Madison, Connecticut. The 6K race begins at noon.
Freshman Becky Celorio (Scotia, NY) leads the Pride into the 2012 NCAA Regional after leading the Pride in all five of their meets this season including first place finishes at the 5K NJIT Classic in September and the 4K St. John's Fall Festival in October. In her last outing, Celorio placed 24th to lead Hofstra to a seventh-place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, recording the ninth-best 6K time (22:33) in school history.
Senior Cara Mattson (East Meadow, NY) was the Pride's second runner in the CAAs, placing 58th (43 pts.) in a personal-best 24:17. Junior Kristin Mathis (Williamstown, NJ) finished 62nd (45 pts.) in 24:39 with classmate Brittney Towner (Rocky River, OH) placing 65th (47 pts.) in 24:45. Sophomore Eva Holtermann (Staten Island, NY) was the Pride's final scorer, placing 77th (54 pts.) in 26:11. Freshman Lisa Eberwein (Coatesville, PA) was 78th (55 pts.) in 26:15 and junior Jacklyn McKnight (North Massapequa, NY) was 82nd (56 pts.) in 28:40.
Last year at the NCAA Regional at the Audubon Golf Course in Buffalo, New York, Kristin Mathis placed 178th to lead the Pride to a 32nd place finish. Mathis (Williamstown, NJ) clocked a time of 24:16 on the 6K course.
Mattson was 201st (199 pts.) in 24:41 and Holtermann was 217th (214 pts.) in 25:25 to round out the returning scoring members of the team in 2011. As a team, Hofstra finished in 32nd place with 967 points in the 36-team field. The Championship was won by Syracuse, which placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 48 to post 116 points and edge out second place Boston College (127) and third place Cornell (137). The individual champion was sophomore Abbey D'Agostino from 10th-place Dartmouth, who clocked a time of 20:25.
