Madison, WI - The Pride would four of the first seven matches but the Badgers rallied to win the final three matches as #25 Wisconsin defeated #16 Hofstra, 18-13 at the UW Field House Sunday afternoon. The Badgers are 1-0 on the season while the Pride, following their loss at third-ranked Minnesota on Friday night, is 0-2.

Opening up at 125 pounds, Hofstra senior Steve Bonanno (Wantagh, NY) gave the Pride a 4-0 lead with a 12-3 major decision over sophomore Matt Calallaris. Bonanno jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two periods to even his season record at 1-1. At 133 pounds, Pride junior Jamie Franco, ranked 15th by InterMat, and UW's Tom Kelliher had one of the most exciting matches of the day as Franco posted a takedown in the waning seconds of regulation to tie the match at 7-7. He then recorded a takedown in overtime to post the 9-7 win, a 7-0 lead in the contest and even his season record at 1-1.

But the Badgers closed the gap with consecutive wins at 141 and 149 pounds as third-ranked junior Tyler Graf posted a third period reversal and a penalty point to edge Pride junior Luke Vaith (Hastings, MN), 5-3 at 141 and senior Cole Schmitt blanked Pride senior Matt Spataro (Garfield, NJ), 3-0 to close the score to 7-6. Both Vaith and Spataro are 1-1 this season. Hofstra senior Tyler Banks (Griswold, CT) took the Pride into the intermission with a 10-6 lead following a 6-2 victory over sophomore Alex Yde. Banks is also 1-1 on the year.

Wisconsin quickly picked up those lost points with a win at 165 as sophomore Frank Cousins battled back from a 6-3 deficit after two periods to post a 9-7 victory over sophomore Nick Terdick (East Northport, NY) and close the deficit to 10-9 in the contest. Hofstra sophomore Jermaine John (Brooklyn, NY) gave the Pride a little breathing room with what would turn out to be their last win of the day in a 3-2 decision over junior Scott Liegel. Leading 1-0 after two periods, John's takedown sandwiched between two Liegel escapes were the difference as the Pride opened up a 13-9 advantage.

But the Badgers came roaring back as sophomore Dylan Iczkowski topped Hofstra junior Taras Luzhnyy (Kiev, Ukraine), 8-5 at 184 pounds to close the deficit to 13-12 and junior Jackson Hein gave Wisconsin their first lead of the day at 15-13 at 197 pounds with a nine-point third period to post a 12-5 victory over freshman Victor Pozsonyi (Roselle Park, NJ). Needing a win at 285 pounds to at least tie the match, Cole Tobin's third period takedown snapped a 2-2 tie on the way to a 4-3 victory over Hofstra senior Paul Snyder (Greensburg, PA).

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, November 17 when they travel to Ithaca, NY for the New York State Collegiate Championships.
