Ithaca, NY - After finishing third with eight place-winners in the New York State Championship on Saturday, five more Hofstra wrestlers were place-winners in the New York State Open B Championship at Cornell University's Newman Arena Sunday night.
Redshirt freshman Joey Goskinski (Bartlett, IL) and true freshman Jahlani Callender (North Lauderdale, FL) placed second at 133 and 149 pounds, respectively. Red-shirt sophomore Zeal McGrew (Glenville, NY) placed third at 285 pounds while freshmen Sam Schwartzapfel (Smithtown, NY) and Jimmy Trull (Bellevue, WA) placed fourth at 157 and 285 pounds, respectively for the Pride.
Gosinski, who was making his 2012-13 debut, was 3-1 with two major decisions. He lost to Buffalo's Sean Walton in the B final, 3-1. Callender was also 3-1 with one major decision. He dropped a 6-2 decision to Cornell's Ryan Dunphy. Callender is now 4-3 on the season.
McGrew was 4-1 with two pins and two major decisions. After dropping his opening match, he swept through the consolation bracket including a pin of teammate Jimmy Trull at the 2:13 mark of the 285 pound final. McGrew is now 7-3 on the year.
Schwartzapfel, who was also making his Hofstra debut, was 3-2 with two major decisions at 157 pounds. He dropped a 5-0 decision to Cornell's Scott Bosak in the 157 pound consolation final to place fourth. Trull was 4-2 on the day and recorded three wins by fall before losing to teammate Zeal McGrew by pin in the 285 consolation final.
Three other Pride grapplers posted even records or better as freshmen Michael Caputo (Stony Point, NY) and Dan Spurgeon (North Massapequa, NY) were 3-2 at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively while classmate Dalton Ahern (Old Saybrook, CT) was 2-2 at 157 pounds.
The Pride will return to dual match action on Saturday, November 24 at the Asics-Journeymen Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College, in Troy, New York. Hofstra will face Bloomsburg (9:30 a.m.), Oklahoma (11:25 a.m.), Central Michigan (1:40 p.m.) and Purdue (3:30 p.m.) at the Northeast Duals.
