Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Wrestling team returns to dual match action this Saturday, November 24 with four matches, including three Top 25 opponents, at the 10th Annual Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. The 14-team, four round event begins at 9:30 a.m.

The Pride, who are 0-2 on the year and receiving votes in the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll this week, will face Bloomsburg University (3-1) at 9:30 a.m., 10th-ranked Oklahoma (1-0) at 11:25 a.m., 11th-ranked Central Michigan (1-0) at 1:40 p.m. and 23rd-ranked Purdue (4-1) at 3:30 p.m. Hofstra has already faced top-ranked Minnesota and former 25th-ranked Wisconsin earlier this season.


This will be Hofstra's fourth trip to the Northeast Duals after appearances in 2006, 2007 and 2009. The Pride recorded one of the top wins ever at the 2006 Duals, topping top-ranked Minnesota, 18-17. Hofstra was 4-0 in that year's Duals with wins over the Golden Gophers, American (33-12), Princeton (45-6) and Bloomsburg (27-15).  


The Pride was 2-1 in the 2007 Northeast Duals defeating #25 Bloomsburg (30-12) and Bucknell (24-15) and dropping a 20-16 decision to #3 Oklahoma State.


The last time Hofstra participated in the Duals was during the 2009-10 season with the Pride posting a 1-2 mark with a win over Northern Colorado (27-9) and falling to Virginia (28-6) and Nebraska (29-6).


The Pride has faced all four of their 2012 Northeast Duals opponents in recent year. Hofstra defeated Bloomsburg on November 24, 2007 in the Northeast Duals, 27-15. The Pride and the Sooners met in Oklahoma in both 2005-06 and 2006-07. Oklahoma won in Oklahoma City on February 12, 2006, 26-15 and on February 17, 2007 in Norman, 21-13. Hofstra faced Purdue on November 6, 2010 in the season-opening Edinboro Duals, 28-6. The Pride faced the Chippewas of Central Michigan in consecutive years, tying them in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on January 7, 2007, 18-18 and dropping a 22-14 decision in Hempstead on January 6, 2008.


Hofstra is coming off a third-place finish at the New York State Collegiate A Championship in Ithaca, NY last Saturday. Senior Paul Snyder (Greensburg, PA) won the 285 pound title and seven other Pride wrestlers were place-winners at Cornell University's Newman Arena. The Pride finished third in the 19-team Championship that was won by Cornell University. The Big Red finished with 183.5 points while Columbia University was second with 152.5. The Pride finished with 135.5 points. Buffalo (130.5) was fourth while defending champion Army (125.5) was fifth.


Snyder (4-2) swept through the heavyweight class, posting a 4-0 mark and defeating Buffalo's Justin Heiserman in the championship match, 3-1. Two Pride wrestlers placed second as senior Steve Bonanno (Wantagh, NY) and sophomore Jermaine John (Brooklyn, NY) were finalists at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively. Bonanno (3-2), the number one seed at 125, was 2-1 with a tech fall in the Championship. The 2012 All-American is now 3-2 on the year and ranked ninth this week in the AWN Weekly Poll. John (5-2) posted a 4-1 record with a win by fall, major decision and two decisions in the tournament.


Two Hofstra grapplers, juniors Jamie Franco (Monroe, NY) and Luke Vaith (Hastings, MN), placed third at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Franco (5-2), the number one seed at 133, recorded a 4-1 record with a tech fall and a major decision in the Championship. Vaith, the number two seed at 141, also recorded a 4-1 record with two tech falls and two major decisions. Vaith is now 5-2 on the season and ranked eighth by AWN this week.


Sophomore Nick Terdick (East Northport, NY) placed fourth at 165 pounds with a 4-2 record with a tech fall and a major decision. He is now 4-4 on the season. Senior Matt Spataro (Garfield, NJ) placed fifth at 149 pounds with a 3-2 mark in the Championship with two wins by fall. Spataro is 7-5 on the season. Junior Tim Murphy (Nazareth, PA), who was making his first appearance on the mat this season, was seventh at 197 pounds with a 3-2 in the tournament with a tech fall and a major decision.


Freshman Jay Lysne (Lakeview, OR) posted a 3-2 record with two major decisions at 157 pounds. He is now 5-4 on the season. Senior Taras Luzhnyy (Kiev, Ukraine) was 1-2 at 184 pounds and is 1-4 on the year.


Several other members of the Pride, who competed in the New York State B Championship last Sunday, could be seeing action in the Northeast Duals including red-shirt freshman Joey Gosinski (Bartlett, IL), who was 3-1 and placed second at 133 pounds, and red-shirt sophomore Zeal McGrew (Glenville, NY), who was 4-1 and placed third at 285 pounds. McGrew is 8-2 this year. Red-shirt sophomore Cody Ruggirello (Walden, NY), who is 1-2 this season at 149 pounds, and freshman Victor Pozsonyi (Roselle Park, NJ), who is 0-2 on the season but did not wrestle last week, could also see action this week.
