Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men’s Basketball team will host Wagner on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as the Pride look to pick up their fourth win of the young season.
Hofstra (3-5) dropped its third straight game on Saturday, 73-47, to Southern Methodist as senior guard Stevie Mejia led the Pride with 11 points, while sophomore guard Taran Buie added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Stephen Nwaukoni led Hofstra with eight rebounds off the bench, while also adding four points.
It has been a season of streaks so far for Hofstra as they opened the 2012-13 campaign with a pair of losses before an impressive three-game win streak followed – a streak that included wins over South Dakota State and Marshall. The Pride will look to end its current three-game losing skid on Tuesday against a Wagner squad that enters the contest with a 2-4 record. Wagner fell to Temple, 70-62, on Saturday in its last game.
Buie is Hofstra’s leading scorer at 13.7 points per game, while also chipping in nicely with four rebounds per game and nine assists this season. Mejia leads Hofstra in assists with 25 and also averages 10.6 points per game.
Jonathon Williams is tops on the Seahawks in scoring and rebounding with averages of 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, respectively. Williams and Kenneth Ortiz led the Seahawks with 15 points each against Temple, with Ortiz adding seven rebounds and five assists as well. Mario Moody had nine points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
This week has a pair of local rivals on the schedule as after facing Wagner the Pride will travel to LIU-Brooklyn on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
