Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University Head Wrestling Coach Rob Anspach announced today that Russell Benner, a junior on the Pride wrestling team, has been suspended from the Hofstra Wrestling program and will be required to perform community service for making insensitive and inappropriate comments on Twitter.

“We want to apologize to all those affected and offended by Russell’s comments,” said Hofstra University Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway.  “We certainly do not condone this type of behavior from our student-athletes.  Hofstra University has provided formal educational seminars on the proper use of social media and will continue to stress the importance of responsibility when utilizing the many different social media platforms available.”

Most significantly, Benner has sent letters of apology to the Presidents of Penn State University and Hofstra University.

A transfer from Appalachian State, Benner is red-shirting this season and has not appeared in a dual match this year for the Pride.
