WREST: Pride Fall To Iowa and Ohio State At The Garden

In the first match, the Hawkeyes, who have captured 23 national titles in their history and placed third in last year's NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis, recorded two wins by fall and six major decisions to post the victory. At 125, defending national champion and top-ranked Hawkeye Matt McDonough jumped out to a 6-2 lead after one period on the way to a 10-2 major decision over 19th-ranked senior Steve Bonanno. Iowa's third-ranked Tony Ramos boosted the lead to 8-0 at 133 with a 14-4 major over Pride junior Jamie Franco. At 141, 11th-ranked Mark Ballweg of Iowa recorded a late-third period takedown to edge the Pride's 13th-ranked junior Luke Vaith, 3-2 for a 11-0 lead.
The Hawkeyes then rattled off five consecutive bonus-point victories as Michael Kelly majored Pride senior Matt Spataro, 14-2 at 149; top-ranked Derek St. John remained undefeated with a 16-4 major over Pride sophomore Cody Ruggirello at 157; 19th-ranked Nick Moore jumped out to an 8-2 lead after one period on the way to a 12-4 victory over Hofstra sophomore Nick Terdick at 165; seventh-ranked Mike Evans blanked and majored Pride sophomore Jermaine John, 8-0 at 174; and seventh-ranked Ethan Lofthouse pinned Hofstra freshman Victor Pozsonyi at the 2:39 mark at 184 pounds to end the bonus-point run and boost the lead to 33-0.
Iowa's Nathan Burak recorded a five-point second period to boost his lead to 7-2 on the way to a 10-3 victory over Pride junior Tim Murphy at 197. At 285, after a scoreless first period, Iowa's fifth-ranked Bobby Telford pinned Pride senior Paul Snyder in the second period, at the 4:35 mark on the contest, to close out the match. The Hawkeyes are 8-0 on the season and now 7-0 against Hofstra,
In the second match against Ohio State, the Buckeyes tallied two wins by pin, a tech fall and three major decision on the way to a 38-3 victory. The match opened with another top-20 match-up as Bonanno, at 19, faced 14th-ranked Nikko Triggas at 125 pounds. In a hard-fought battle, Triggas' third period escape was the difference in a 1-0 decision over Bonanno (7-7). At 133 pounds, top-ranked Logan Stieber jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first period on the way to a 16-0 tech fall win (4:14) over junior Jamie Franco (7-9). Second-ranked Buckeye Hunter Stieber boosted the lead to 12-0 at 141, posting an 8-3 lead after one period on the way to a 17-7 major decision over #10 Luke Vaith (9-7). Ian Paddock bumped the lead to 18-0 with a pin of Pride senior Matt Spataro (9-12) in 4:46 at 149 pounds.
Josh Demas majored Cody Ruggirello (1-5), 9-0 at 157 pounds and Mark Martin topped Nick Terdick (4-12), 6-2 at 165 to boost the Ohio State lead to 25-0 before the Pride got on the board. At 174, in a thrilling finish to regulation, Buckeye Craig Thomas posted a reversal in the waning seconds to take an 8-7 lead but a riding time advantage for Jermaine John tied the match at 8-8 and sent the contest into overtime. John (9-7) went after Thomas in the sudden victory period and posted a takedown just 12 seconds into the period for the 10-8 victory.
But that would be the Pride's lone victory as Kenny Courts majored Pride freshman Victor Pozsonyi (0-5), 13-1 at 184, 10th-ranked Andrew Campolattano pinned Tim Murphy (2-10) at 197 and fifth-ranked Peter Capone tallied a reversal and a takedown in the third period to defeat Paul Snyder (10-5) at 285 for the 38-3 final score. Ohio State is now 6-0 on the year while the Pride fell to 0-11.
The Pride will break for final semester examinations before returning to action on December 29-30 at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
