Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men’s Basketball team will end the non-conference portion of its 2012-13 schedule on New Year’s Day as the Pride will head to Boca Raton, Florida to take on Florida Atlantic on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

It will be all Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) games for Hofstra (3-9) following the game against the Owls with CAA play starting up on Monday, January 7 at home against Georgia State.

Hofstra will hope the new year brings a change of luck for the Pride as they are currently in the midst of a seven-game losing skid dating back to a double overtime victory over Marshall on November 18.

The Pride has been off since December 22 when it dropped an 83-62 decision to Tulane at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.  It marked Hofstra’s first appearance in an arena that houses a NBA team since appearing in the Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden during the 2009-10 campaign (December 20 and 21, 2009).

Sophomore guard Taran Buie scored a team-high 15 points vs. Tulane. The Albany, NY native has tallied double figures in seven straight games and nine of his last 10 contests. He also ranks ninth in the CAA in scoring. Senior guard Stevie Mejia contributed nine points, eight rebounds and six assists vs. Tulane. Mejia ranks third in the CAA with 4.2 assists per game and has also scored double digits six times.

Buie and Mejia are Hofstra’s top two scorers at 15.3 and 9.8 points, respectively.  Buie has drained a team-best 19 three-pointers this season, while, Mejia leads Hofstra in assists (50).

FAU (6-8) dropped a narrow 65-64 decision at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday evening in its last game.  Greg Gantt is the Owls top scoring threat as he is averaging 22.1 points per game.  Stefan Moody is second with 15 points per outing.

The New Year’s Day game marks the eighth all-time meeting between Hofstra and Florida Atlantic.  The Pride leads the series, 5-2, with the Owls earning a 62-60 win in Hempstead last season.  The first meeting between the squads occurred during the 1996-97 campaign with Hofstra winning by the score of 65-61.

After the meeting with Florida Atlantic Hofstra will play two of its next three games at the Mack Sports Complex starting with the contest against Georgia State on January 7.  The Pride will also host The College of William & Mary on January 12.  For ticket information please call (516) HOF-TIXX or visit HERE.
