Hempstead, NY - Hofstra freshmen Jamel Hudson and Frank Affronti captured individual titles to lead five Pride place-winners at the 2013 Franklin and Marshall Wrestling Open at the Alumni Sport and Fitness Center's Schnader Fieldhouse Saturday night.
Eight Hofstra wrestlers, competing unattached, traveled to Lancaster, Pennsylvania and saw Hudson (Bay Shore, NY) capture the 141-pound title and Affronti (Ontario, NY) grab the 165-pound championship, red-shirt sophomore Zeal McGrew (Glenville, NY) place third at 285 and freshmen Dalton Ahern (Old Saybrook, CT) and Jimmy Trull (Bellevue, WA) place seventh/eighth at 157 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Hudson, the 2012 New York State champion from St. Anthony's High School on Long Island, posted a 4-0 mark in the F&M Open and defeated Rick Durso from the host school in the title match, 7-6. He recorded a pin and two major decisions leading up to the final. Hudson is 7-4 on the year while wrestling in three open tournaments.
Affronti, a third-place finisher in the 2012 New York State High School Championships at 160 pounds, was 5-0 in the F&M Open and defeated Travis Moyer from Lock Haven in the 165-pound championship match, 4-0. All of his victories were by decision as he improved to 5-1 on the season.
McGrew, who placed second in the New York State High School Championships in 2010, advanced to the 285-pound semifinals where he lost to Maryland's Spencer Myers by tech fall, 17-0. He then posted two wins in the consolations including a 3-1 victory over Brandon Clarke from Kutztown in the third-place match. McGrew, who was 4-1 in the F&M Open, is now 15-5 in four tournaments on the season.
Ahern, a two-time Connecticut State High School champion, recorded a 4-2 record in the F&M Open at 157 pounds and placed seventh/eighth. After losing his first match, he came back with four straight victories in the consolations before North Carolina's Jacob Crawford stopped him in the wrestleback quarterfinals by fall. Ahern is 6-9 on the season.
Trull, a three-time Washington State High School Championships place-winner, was 2-2 in the F&M Open with an opening round win by fall. After a win in the consolations, he lost to Navy's Brendan Kahle in the wrestleback quarterfinals to finish seventh/eighth at 285 pounds. Trull is 9-10 on the season.
Freshmen Jahlani Callender (North Lauderdale, FL) and Cory Goshkagarian (Somerset, NJ) also posted 2-2 records at 149 pounds but did not place and classmate Dan Spurgeon (North Massapequa, NY) was 0-2 at 165 pounds.
