Hempstead, NY - After having been ranked in the 2013 preseason top 20 by two publications, the Hofstra men's lacrosse team is now ranked in the preseason Top 20 in the two major polls, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I Coaches Poll and the Nike-Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll, it was announced today.
Hofstra, which was ranked 19th by Lacrosse Magazine and 17th by Face-Off Yearbook in their respective 2013 preseason polls, is ranked 20th in the USILA Coaches Poll and 17th in the Nike-Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
In the USILA Coaches Poll, Hofstra received 18 points to place 20th in the ranking that is headed by the defending national champion Greyhounds of Loyola (232 pts, 10 first-place votes). Maryland, with 221 points and one first-place vote, is second with March opponent Notre Dame (186) third. North Carolina, an April opponent for the Pride, and Johns Hopkins are tied for fourth with 186 points . The Blue Jays received one first place vote as well.
The second five features Duke, with 185 points, Virginia (170), Cornell (168), Denver (150) and Colgate (122) at ten. Lehigh (113) leads off the second 10 and is followed by CAA-foe Massachusetts (104), Syracuse (103), Princeton, and another CAA member Penn State (68) at 15. Early season opponent Fairfield comes in at 16 and is followed by Yale, Bucknell, Ohio State and Hofstra to wrap-up the top 20.
In the Nike Media Poll, the Pride is ranked 17th with 70 points. Loyola also heads this poll with 494 points and 21 first place votes. Maryland is second with 459 points and two number one votes while Notre Dame is third with 427 points and two first place nods. Duke, with 416 points, comes in at number four with Johns Hopkins fifth with 402 points and one first place vote. Cornell is ranked sixth with 360 points and is followed by North Carolina (354) at seven, Denver (325) at eight, Virginia (319) at nine and Lehigh (272) at number ten.
The second ten in the media poll starts with Colgate at 11 followed by Syracuse, UMass, Princeton, Penn State, Fairfield, Hofstra, Bucknell, Yale and Ohio State.
The Pride, who begin their 2013 season on Saturday, February 16 at James M. Shuart Stadium against Sacred Heart University at 1:30 p.m., return 27 players, including seven starters from their 2012 squad that posted a 6-8 record. Leading Hofstra is their top two scorers in senior midfielder Adrian Sorichetti, who tallied 24 goals and a team-high 14 assists in 12 games, and junior attackman Lance Yapor, who posted a team-high 25 goals and 10 assists in 14 games last season. Hofstra also returns all three starting defenders in graduate-students Mark Mullen and Michael Hamilton, and senior Cody Solaja.
Hofstra, which began preseason practice on January 21, had scrimmages against Holy Cross and host Syracuse at the Carrier Dome this past Saturday. The Pride will host Marquette and Penn at Shuart Stadium on Saturday, February 9 before the season opener a week later.
