Hempstead, NY - The Pride jumped out to a 15-3 at the midway point of the contest but the 10th ranked Big Red recorded three falls, an injury default win and a decision in the second half as Cornell defeated Hofstra, 30-15 at the Mack Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. The Pride, who saw their three-match winning streak come to an end, fell to 5-13 on the season while Cornell improved to 10-3 in 2012-13.

Opening the match at 125, Big Red freshman Nahshon Garrett, ranked sixth in the country by InterMat, recorded a first period takedown and an escape in the third to post a 3-1 victory over Hofstra's 16th-ranked senior Steve Bonanno (13-8). Garrett improved to 28-3 on the year and snapped Bonanno's six-match winning streak.

But the Pride won the next four matches to take a strong lead into the intermission at 15-3. Junior Jamie Franco notched an escape in the first tie-breaker to defeat sophomore Bricker Dixon (14-10), 2-1 at 133. Franco evened his record at 12-12 this season. Pride junior Luke Vaith gave Hofstra a 6-3 lead in the 141-pound match with a 5-0 win over junior Mike Nevinger (27-7). Vaith, who accumulated 3:12 in riding time, improved to 17-10 this season.

At 149, red-shirt sophomore Cody Ruggirello made it three-in-a-row for Hofstra with a pin of junior Ryan Dunphy (19-9) at the 4:54 mark. It was Ruggirello's second pin of the season as he improved to 3-12 on the year. Pride senior Tyler Banks closed out the first half of the match with a 4-3 decision in the second tie-breaker over Jesse Shanaman (7-3). Banks won his fourth consecutive match to improve to 5-3 on the season.

The second half of the contest was all Cornell and started with senior and three-time national champion Kyle Dake at 165 pounds. Dake (21-0) tallied his 11th pin of the season, stopping Hofstra sophomore Nick Terdick (4-19) at the 1:04 of the match to start the Big Red on their comeback. Junior Marshall Peppelman closed the deficit to 15-12 with a 5-3 win over Hofstra sophomore Jermaine John. Peppelman tallied two takedowns in the third period to boost his record to 14-11. John, who saw his six-match winning streak stopped, slipped to 16-10 this year.

Cornell then took the lead at 184 pounds as fourth-ranked senior Steve Bosak (10-2) pinned senior Taras Luzhnyy (2-15) at the 2:54 mark. It was Bosak's third win by fall this year as the Big Red took an 18-15 lead. Sophomore Jace Bennett (21-11) gave Cornell its third pin of the match at 197 pounds with a fall victory over Pride freshman Victor Pozsonyi (1-12) at the 1:58 mark to increase the lead to 24-15.

With the match already decided in favor of the Big Red, the contest went from bad to worse for the Pride when Hofstra senior Paul Snyder (18-8) suffered a knee injury in his 285-pound match against sophomore Jacob Aiken-Phillips (12-6) and lost by injury default in the third period to close out the contest. The loss snapped Snyder's six-match winning streak. Hofstra fell to the Big Red for the ninth consecutive time.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, February 10 when they travel to CAA-opponent Binghamton University for a 2 p.m. match.
