Hempstead, NY – For the second consecutive match, Hofstra split the ten matches with its opponent but the 23rd-ranked Bloomsburg Huskies posted three wins by fall to record a 24-21 come-from-behind non-conference victory over Hofstra at the Nelson Field House Sunday afternoon.
Starting the match at 197, the Pride quickly found themselves trailing 12-0 after two matches as fifth-ranked Richard Perry pinned Pride junior Zeal McGrew (6-11) at the 2:01 mark and Sam Shirley pinned Hofstra freshman Michael Hughes (10-13) at the 4:00 mark at 285.
But Hofstra rallied behind their lightweights again, winning five of the next six matches to open up a 21-15 lead. Senior Jamie Franco (17-6), ranked 20th by InterMat, started it off for the Pride with a 4-0 decision over Sean Boylan at 125. Freshman Jamel Hudson (14-4) followed with a 9-4 decision over 19th-ranked Nick Wilcox at 133 to close the deficit to 12-6. Hofstra then received back-to-back pins as 11th-ranked senior Luke Vaith (20-4) pinned Matt Rappo at the 3:53 mark of their 141-pound match and junior Cody Ruggirello (17-7) tallied his seventh pin of the season in his 149-pound match against Derek Goodwin to give the Pride an 18-12 lead.
Bloomsburg closed the gap to 18-15 after Kevin Hartnett posted a 9-4 decision over red-shirt freshman Jahlani Callender (12-6), who was making his collegiate dual match debut at 157 pounds. But Hofstra graduate-student Joe Booth (24-5), ranked 15th by InterMat, topped 13th-ranked senior Josh Veltre, 5-3 at 165 pounds to give the Pride a 21-15 advantage. But it would be Hofstra’s last win of the day.
Bloomsburg senior Mike Dessino would tie the match at 21-all with a pin of red-shirt freshman Frank Affronti (8-12) at the 3:00 mark of their 174-pound match setting up the battle for the match at 184. In that battle, Huskies senior Sam Shirey edged Hofstra sophomore Victor Pozsonyi (3-12), 5-3 to give Bloomsburg the victory.
Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive match, slipped to 4-6 on the season. Bloomsburg, which snapped a three-match losing skid, improved to 5-5 on the year.
The Pride will return to action this Friday, January 24 when they host Drexel University in an EIWA match at the Mack Sports Complex. Match time is 7 p.m.
