After their Senior Night victory over Binghamton this past Friday night, the Hofstra Wrestling team returns to action today (Feb. 9) when the Pride travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to face the Broncs of Rider University. Match time at Alumni Gymnasium is 5 p.m.   

On a night that Hofstra honored some of its alumni as well as its four graduating seniors, Luke Vaith (Hastings, MN) at 141,Jamie Franco (Monroe, NY) at 125, Zeal McGrew (Glenville, NY) at 197 and graduate-student Joe Booth (Bayville, NY) at 165, the Pride won eight of 10 matches to cruise to a 28-8 EIWA victory. Opening the match at 197-pounds, Hofstra dropped its first two matches before rattling off eight consecutive wins.

Vaith, a fifth-year senior, has compiled a 98-54 record during his Pride career and is currently ranked as high as sixth nationally in his weight class. Franco, another fifth-year senior, is enjoying the best season of his career and has a 72-57 career mark. McGrew, who is graduating in May after four years, became a starter this season and has posted a 45-35 career record for the Pride. Booth, who came to Hofstra this year after wrestling and graduating from Drexel, is 26-5 with Hofstra this year and 96-31 in his college career.

Hofstra, 6-6 on the season in dual matches and 4-2 in the EIWA, continues to have five wrestlers ranked in the five weekly polls. Heading the group is Vaith, who improved to 22-4 on the season with the victory over Binghamton. Vaith is ranked sixth by FLO Wrestling, eighth by Amateur Wrestling News, and 11th by WIN Magazine and InterMat, and 12th by the Wrestling Report.

Booth is 26-5 on the year and is ranked 12th by WIN, 14th by AWN and FLO, and 15th by InterMat and the Wrestling Report. Franco, who is 19-6 on the season at 125, is ranked 15th by TWR, 16th by InterMat, 18th by WIN and 20th by FLO. Red-shirt freshman Jamel Hudson, who is 16-4 at 133 pounds this year, is ranked 18th by AWN, InterMat, AWN and FLO and 24th by TWR. Junior Cody Ruggirello, who is also having the best season of his career with a 19-7 mark, is ranked 23rd at 149 pounds by TWR.

The Rider wrestling team will play host to one of its oldest rivals Sunday as the Broncs host the Hofstra Pride. Rider is 12-6 this season including a 4-1 mark in their new league, the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL).

The match will also be Rider’s Senior Day, as Alumni Gymnasium says goodbye to two of the program’s more successful wrestlers. Seniors Ramon Santiago (14-12) and Jim Resnick (2-2) will appear in the Broncs’ Zoo for the final time Sunday. Resnick is a three-time NCAA qualifier with 65 victories. Santiago has 75 victories and is also an NCAA qualifier.  Both have been ranked among the top 15 in the nation in their respective weight classes.

Rider and Hofstra have met 41 times since the series began in 1973-74, with Rider winning 17.Rider and Hofstra are former East Coast Conference, East Coast Wrestling Association and Colonial Athletic Association rivals.
