Hempstead, NY - Here is this week's Hofstra Happenings, recapping a busy week in Pride Athletics as well as previewing key events for this week.
Men's Basketball To Air On SNY Tonight
Tonight's men's basketball game at James Madison will air live in the New York Area on SportsNet New York (SNY-TV). Check your local listings for channel availability. Click the link to access game notes, live statistics and live video (subject to blackout). Hofstra is coming off a win over UNCW Saturday night, completing the season sweep of the Seahawks. The game was Military Appreciation Night at the Mack Sports Complex. Check out the photo gallery below for some great images from the game.
Pride Represented At LIMLF Hall Of Fame Induction
Two Hofstra alums and a former Pride assistant coach were inducted into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame at the 29th Annual LIMLF Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner Saturday night, February 8. Hofstra All-Americans Doug Shanahan, Class of 2001, Nicky Polanco, Class of 2002, and former Pride Assistant Coach Ernie Olsen, were among the seven inductees to be honored.
Women's Basketball Downs William & Mary
The Pride women picked up a 10-point win over William & Mary Sunday and have now won four of their last five contests. Hofstra wore its pink uniforms in the game to support breast cancer research and also celebrated Girl Scout Day by welcoming many local-area troops. The Pride step out of conference this Thursday when they welcome NJIT to the Mack Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
Suffolk Sports Hall Of Fame Announces 2014 Class
Hofstra Softball Coach Bill Edwards and men's lacrosse All-Americans Doug Shanahan and James C. Metzger will be inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame on May 2, 2014.
Wrestling Splits Over Weekend
The Pride wrestling team defeated EIWA foe Binghamton Friday night on Senior Night and Alumni Night before dropping a close match to long-time rival Rider on the road Sunday evening. During Friday's match, ceremonies were held to recognize the graduating seniors and returning alumni, including a special presentation to Noel Thompson, Class of 2004, in recognition of his induction National Wrestling Hall of Fame later this year. The Colonial Athletic Association release preseason polls in softball and women's lacrosse last week with the Pride picked first in the softball poll and third in the women's lacrosse poll. The conference also announced that junior defender April Iannetta was named the Preseason CAA Co-Player of the Year and that junior attack Brittain Altomare and sophomore midfielder Becky Conto joined her on the Preseason All-CAA squad.
Team Captains Announced
Head Coaches Seth Tierney and Shannon Smith both announced their respective teams captains this past week. Torin Varn and Anthony Zappone will represent the men's lacrosse team as captains, while Emily Corzel and Emily von Hollen were named captains of the women's lacrosse team.
The men's lacrosse team opens the 2014 season Saturday versus Marquette, coached by Hofstra alum and former associate head coach Joe Amplo, at Noon in James M. Shuart Stadium. The women's lacrosse team opens their season at New Hampshire, while softball will be in Florida for the start of the 2014 campaign. Hofstra Baseball opens the year Friday as well, traveling to 2013 College World Series runner-up Mississippi State.
