Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse team will look for its first road win of the 2014 season on Saturday when the Pride head to Colgate for a 1 p.m. contest.

Hofstra is coming off an exciting 8-7 victory over Fairfield on Wednesday as junior attacker Sam Lenox broke a seven-all tie with an unassisted goal with 14 seconds left in regulation to give the Pride its first win of the season. It marked the second straight season that the game between Hofstra and Fairfield ended with the Pride winning 8-7 (last year’s went to overtime).

The Pride looked to be in control against the Stags as Hofstra led 7-4 with 7:36 left before Fairfield battled back to eventually knot the score at seven with 39 seconds remaining. Lenox would prove to be the hero as her second goal of the season was the game winner.

It was a breakout game for junior attacker Brittain Altomare as the star third-year player totaled game-highs of three goals, two assists and five points to carry Hofstra to the victory. Junior defender April Iannetta was equally strong on the defensive end as she had four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Her draw control and caused turnover total were both game-high totals.

Through two games this season, Brittain Altomare leads Hofstra with six points on three goals and three assists. Junior goalie Kelsey Gregerson has picked up a team-best nine ground balls, while playing all 120 minutes in net for the Pride. She has an 8.00 goals against average and a save percentage of .467. Iannetta is tops on the squad with six draw controls and is tied with Gregerson for team-high honors in caused turnovers with three.

Hofstra defeated Colgate, 13-11, early in the 2013 season as senior midfielder Alexandra Mezzanotte had three goals and Iannetta posted four caused turnovers.

Colgate is 0-1 in 2014 as they dropped a 14-11 decision to Vermont in their season opener on February 15.

Following this contest Hofstra will start a three-game homestand with a huge test on Tuesday as No. 3 Maryland visits James M. Shuart Stadium for a 5:30 p.m. contest. That game is part of a doubleheader with the men’s lacrosse team, which hosts Fairfield at 3 p.m. For ticket information call (516) HOF-TIXX or visit GoHofstra.com/tix. The three games at home will also see the Pride face Central Connecticut State on March 1 and Marist on March 7.
