Ithaca, NY – Senior Luke Vaith, junior Cody Ruggirello and graduate-student Joe Booth each posted bonus-point victories for the Pride but the Big Red won six of the 10 matches as fourth-ranked Cornell defeated Hofstra in an EIWA match at the Friedman Wrestling Center Saturday afternoon.

Vaith, ranked 10th by InterMat at 141 pounds, defeated Joe Rendina by tech fall, 21-5 to boost his season record to 25-5. Ruggirello tallied his team-leading eighth pin of the season with a fall over Connor David in 59 seconds at 149 pounds. Booth, who tallied his 99th career victory, tallied his second tech fall of the year, defeating Jacob George, 23-8 at 165. Hofstra red-shirt freshman Frank Affronti downed Jesse Shanaman, 5-4 for the Pride’s other victory in the match.

Starting at 157 pounds, Cornell’s Taylor Simaz opened with 4-0 decision over Pride red-shirt freshman Jahlani Callender. But Booth (28-7), who is ranked 15th, gave Hofstra the lead with his tech fall at 165 and Affronti boosted it to 8-3 with his win at 174.

But the Big Red rattled off five straight wins, including bookend forfeits at 184 and 133, to build a commanding 28-8 lead in the contest. Vaith and Ruggirello (22-8) closed out the match with Hofstra victories. Hofstra is now 6-10 overall in dual matches including a 4-3 slate in the EIWA while Cornell is 13-1 overall and 9-0 in conference matches.
The match concluded the dual match part of the season for both teams as the two programs now prepare for the EIWA Championships at the Palestra in Philadelphia on Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9.
