Richmond, VA - Pinch-hitter Kyle Sutherland delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to snap a 5-5 tie and give the Rams a 6-5 victory over the Pride Thursday afternoon at The Diamond. Hofstra had rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the ninth.

VCU improves to 20-28, 10-15 in the CAA, while Hofstra falls to 12-30, 9-16 in league play.

The Rams had led 5-0 after six innings as they scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and two in the sixth. Michael Cheatham had a sacrifice fly in the first inning, while Michael Caddell produced an RBI single in the second inning. In the fourth inning, Landon Prentiss had a two-out double and Caddell followed with an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.

VCU tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth as Prentiss and Caddell had back-to-back singles off of Hofstra starter Rob Kumbatovic , who was then relieved by Brett Schreiber . Bill Cullen greeted Schreiber with a RBI double and after a hit batsman loaded the bases, Joey Cujas singled to drive in Caddell for a 5-0 lead.

The Pride broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally. Matt Ford started things off with a single. Logan Davis followed with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. Dylan Nasiatka then singled to drive home Ford and put runners on the corners for Matt Reistetter . The freshman catcher doubled home both runners to make the score 5-3. The Pride could have tacked on more after Danny Poma singled and Jared Hammer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Brennan Huelse struck out pinch hitter T.J. Thomas to escape the jam.

The score remained 5-3 until the top of the ninth when the Pride scratched out two runs to tie it. Stephan Kungl led off the inning as a pinch hitter and reached on a wild pitch after striking out. Nasiatka then singled to put runners on first and second. Reistetter attempted to sacrifice, but Huelse threw the ball away allowing pinch runner Bobby Gazzola to score and putting runners on second and third. The Rams then intentionally walked Poma to load the bases. Hammer flew out for the first out of the inning and Thomas followed with a fly out of his own, but it was deep enough to score Nasiatka and tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth Hofstra reliever Jeff Guthridge got the first out, but then walked John Lenherr and Taylor Perkins. Sutherland came on to pinch hit and the Pride countered with lefthander Joe Burg . Sutherland took a 1-1 pitch to right field for a single, driving home Lenherr with the winning run.

Nasiatka went three-for-five with two runs and an RBI for the Pride, while Poma was three-for-four on the day. Guthridge took the loss to fall to 2-3 after allowing one run on one hit and three walks in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Caddell went three-for-three with two RBIs and Cullen was four-for-five for VCU. Jonathan Watson pitched one inning of relief to pick up the win and improved to 4-4 on the season.

Game two of the three-game Colonial Athletic Association series will take place Friday at 11:30 a.m.
