Bakersfield, CA - Dave Jesch pitched 4 1/3 innings of one-run relief, allowing four hits with five strikeouts and Hofstra used a four-run fourth to post a 6-4 win over CSU Bakersfield in the nightcap of a doubleheader and salvage a split. The Pride dropped game one, 7-3.
Hofstra is now 2-5 on the season following the split, while CSU Bakersfield is now 3-3.
The Pride scored in their first at bat for the third consecutive game in the series, taking a 1-0 lead in game two on Jared Hammer's RBI single that scored Bryan Verbitsky. But the Roadrunners took advantage of three consecutive walks to start the bottom of the first and a sacrifice fly by Cael Brockmeyer to tie the score.
CSU Bakersfield loaded the bases again in the third and scored two runs on another walk and a hit batsmen to go up 3-1. However, the Pride erupted for four runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Austin Nyman laced a one out single and moved to second after Kevin Brantley walked. The pair executed a double steal and Nyman came in on Joe Perez's single. An errant pickoff attempt allowed Brantley to score and Perez to move to second. Perez would move to third on a wild pitch and then a second wild pitch let him score and moved Dalton Rouleau to second. Verbitsky then came through with an RBI single to plate Rouleau for the 5-3 lead.
The Roadrunners got a run back in the fourth as Dylan
Christensen and Tyler Shyrock led off with consecutive singles and Oscar Sanay
lined a sacrifice fly. But that was all that CSUB would get as Jesch (1-0),
Andrew Barbarino and Verbitsky combined for 6 1/3 of five-hit, one-run relief behind starter Nick Kozlowski.
The Pride tacked on an insurance run in the ninth as Rouleau drove in Nyman with a single. Verbitsky then threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
Nyman had three hits in game two, while Verbitsky added two hits and an RBI. Chuck Buchanan (0-1) took the loss for CSUB, allowing six hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings.
In the opener Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the first as Nyman scored on a wild pitch. Nyman singled to lead off the game and moved to third on a Kenny Jackson single and an infield out. But the Roadrunners came back with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Shyrock reached on an error and took second base on the play. Sanay reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. Brockmeyer singled home Shyrock to tie the score and after another infield hit loaded the bases, Frank Martinez walked to force in the go ahead run.
CSU Bakersfield would add two more runs in the third as Chance Gusbeth had an RBI double and Mylz Jones had a run-scoring ground out. CSUB would tack on a fifth run in the fourth as Brockmeyer delivered and RBI single to score Shyrock.
The Pride scored a run in the seventh as Robbie Cafiero led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Taylor Stuart base hit. But CSUB scored twice in the seventh to extend the lead to 7-2. Hofstra did add a run in the eight on a Cafiero RBI single.
Pride starter John Tiedemann (0-2) allowed nine hits and four earned runs in five innings. Roadrunner starter Scott Brattvet (2-0) got the win after allowing eight hits and two earned runs in eight innings. Pride freshman Kevin Brantley had three hits in the game, while Cafiero, Verbitsky and Nyman each had two hits. Brockmeyer paced the Roadrunner offense with three hits and two RBIs.
