Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men’s Basketball team will open the 2012-13 campaign on Friday when it travels to Monmouth for a 7 p.m. contest.
The road trip will continue on Sunday when Hofstra heads to West Lafayette, IN to take on Purdue at 2 p.m. in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
Hofstra easily defeated Queens in its only exhibition game this past Saturday as they rolled past the Knights, 78-47. The Pride led 44-20 at half and cruised from there en route to the 31-point win. Senior guard Stevie Mejia had a strong game for Hofstra as he contributed a team-high 16 points, to go along with eight rebounds and five steals. Senior forward David Imes added 13 points and seven rebounds, while red-shirt freshman forward Jordan Allen chipped in with 10 points on 5-6 shooting from the field.
The Pride compiled a 10-22 record a season ago and will look to improve on that record with the help of a core of solid returnees and a large group of newcomers.
Hofstra will take on a Monmouth squad that went 12-20 in 2011-12 and returns a trio of starters from last year’s team.
Hofstra and Monmouth have met five times with the Hawks holding a 4-1 lead in the series. The two teams last met in 2003-04 with Monmouth earning an 87-79 victory. Hofstra’s last win in the series came during the 1983-84 campaign when the Pride won by the score of 77-43.
Following the two-game road trip to open the season, Hofstra will return home on Friday, November 16 when it hosts the Hempstead Subregional of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. The three-day affair will feature a total of six games over three days (two each day) and the Pride will host South Dakota State, District of Columbia and Marshall during the tournament.
