Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men’s Basketball team will head south this weekend as they will take on UNCW on Saturday at noon in a contest that will be televised locally by the MSG Network.
Mike Gleason and Charlie Woollum will have the call for MSG, and the game will also air on WLIB (1190 AM), along with PRIDE ZONE Video and Audio coverage on GoHofstra.com.
Hofstra (5-18, 2-8 CAA), will look to end a seven-game losing skid this weekend when they take on a Seahawks squad that brings a 9-14 overall mark and a 3-7 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record into the noon tilt.
The two teams played a tight contest back on January 26 with UNCW escaping Hempstead with a narrow 57-51 victory. Sophomore guard Taran Buie led Hofstra with 13 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Stephen Nwaukoni chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
Hofstra is coming off a tough 62-57 loss to CAA-leading Northeastern on Wednesday. The Pride held a 10-point lead midway through the second stanza before the Huskies stormed back to take the lead and eventually earn the win. Both of Hofstra’s games this season against the conference leader have gone down to the nearly the final possession.
Nwaukoni was strong in the middle for the Pride against Northeastern as he had 11 points and tied his career-high with 13 rebounds. Senior guard Stevie Mejia tied Nwaukoni for team-high honors with 11 points, while also adding three assists.
Nwaukoni has been Hofstra’s most consistent player recently as he continues to impress. Nwaukoni is fourth on the team in scoring with 6.8 points per game, while leading the way with 7.8 rebounds per game.
Buie, who returned to the double figures column against the Huskies, leads the Pride with 14.2 points. Mejia is second in scoring with 10.5 points and first with four assists per game.
Keith Rendleman, who had 11 points and six rebounds against the Pride in the earlier meeting, leads UNCW in scoring and rebounding with averages of 15.7 and 10.3, respectively. Chris Dixon posted a game-high 22 points for UNCW on January 26, while Tanner Milson chipped in with 17 points.
The all-time series between Hofstra and UNCW has been very tight with the Seahawks holding a narrow 14-12 lead. All 26 meetings have occurred since Hofstra joined the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), with Hofstra actually having won 12 of the last 18 meetings following an start that saw UNCW win the first eight games between the two teams. Each team won on their respective home courts last season, while UNCW won this season’s earlier matchup 57-51 in Hempstead on January 26.
