Hempstead, NY - The basketball community gives their thoughts on the hire of Joe Mihalich as the new head coach of the Hofstra University Men's Basketball program.

"Hofstra has made a terrific decision in hiring Joe Mihalich as their new basketball coach,” stated University of Michigan Head Coach John Beilein. “His high character, personality, coaching style, and recruiting ability are a great match for both Hofstra and the CAA.  Hofstra fans everywhere will love Joe and his family and I look forward to seeing his teams compete for conference championships in the years to come."

“Joe Mihalich is an outstanding coach, and a respected basketball man,” said Jay Bilas, ESPN Basketball analyst.  “One of the things that sets Joe apart is the fact that he was, and still is, a teacher first.  In his years at DeMatha, Joe taught school and coached, and he truly understands the demands placed upon players.  He has high standards and expectations, and he is there to help his players meet and exceed them.  Simply put, Joe Mihalich “gets it.”

This is a grand slam hire by Jeff Hathaway,” commented University of Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey. “Joe Mihalich's consistency in the coaching field is greatly respected by so many of us in the coaching profession. He is a great teacher and a high-energy guy. One of things that I noticed when we (Notre Dame) played them a couple of times was that his players loved playing for him. Joe also is greatly connected in the area and network where Hofstra needs to recruit. Joe is the right man at the right time. I am thrilled for Hofstra and him.”

“Congratulations to Coach Mihalich on becoming the head coach at Hofstra,” stated Speedy Claxton, former Hofstra Basketball star and NBA player. “I am excited about the future of the men’s basketball program and look forward to assisting Coach Mihalich in any way as we bring the Pride back to prominence.”

“Congratulations to Coach Mihalich,” commented Temple University Head Coach Fran Dunphy. “I have known Joe for many years and his career and reputation speak for themselves. He is a tremendous coach and even better person. What a great selection by Hofstra!”

“Congratulations to Hofstra University on the hiring of Joe Mihalich as their men's basketball coach,” said Tim Legler, ESPN Basketball analyst and former NBA and La Salle Basketball player. “Having known him for 30 years, I can tell you that Joe is an outstanding communicator, motivator, recruiter, and molder of young men. He is the perfect selection to lead Hofstra in the right direction in the coming years.”

“Joe Mihalich is a proven winner who has consistently challenged for the league title and has done it with class," notes Richard J. Ensor, Commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. “Joe's commitment that his student-athletes excel in the classroom and on the court made him a great leader in the MAAC, from his days as an assistant at La Salle to his time as head coach at Niagara. He will be missed by his colleagues and myself.”

“What a great decision Hofstra has made,” stated Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Morgan Wootten, former head coach at DeMatha Catholic High School. “As the years go by you will realize how great of a selection he is. Joe is a great coach and a class individual. Kids will love to play for him and he is a winner in every respect. Joe gets it done the right way. I compare this hire to when Notre Dame hired Mike Brey. Great hire by Jeff Hathaway.”

"Joe is an outstanding coach - he and Mary are good friends,” commented Villanova University and former Hofstra Head Coach Jay Wright. “Joe understands how special a place Hofstra is - he will be a great representative of Hofstra Pride."

“Coach Mihalich is well respected as a successful teacher and coach,” stated Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Tom Yeager. “We welcome Joe to a long list of talented coaches in the CAA and wish him the best at Hofstra.”
