Hempstead, NY – For the second straight year the women’s soccer program has dominated the Former Athlete Participation Challenge and won the $10,000 top prize. The program saw a remarkable 88% of their alumnae make a gift to support the program.

“I am really proud of our alumnae,” said Head Women’s Soccer Coach Simon Riddiough.  “To have this kind of support from our former athletes is great.  This demonstrates that our alumnae care about the future of our team and I am glad that nearly all of them stepped up to give back to our program.”

The men’s lacrosse program captured the hotly-contested $5,000 competition for which program has the largest increase in former athlete members giving from last year. With 25% of its alumni giving back to support Hofstra Athletics, men’s lacrosse increased by 11% and narrowly defeated the women’s lacrosse program. In fact, the race came down to the final weekend and a strong push from the men’s lacrosse alumni allowed the program to capture the prize.

“To have 25% of our alumni give back is very encouraging,” said Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney.  “We speak to our current student-athletes about how everyone who wears a Hofstra Lacrosse jersey is part of our family and this level of support reinforces our commitment to that message.”

Information about the Challenge:
The Challenge pits each team against each other in a unique form of competition to determine which program can earn the most points by May 31, 2011.  The team with most points will receive $10,000 given by an anonymous donor to support this competition.

The inaugural challenge was captured by the Women’s Soccer program after having 77% of its former athletes make a gift to support the team.  The team finished with 897 points after 63 gifts were received online.

Points are earned in two ways:
1. The percentage of alumni giving will be multiplied by 1000. Example: 100 former-athletes who have made a gift of $25 or more out of 500 former-athletes= .2x1000 = 200 points.
2. As an added bonus an additional two points can be earned for each gift made online by a former athlete between now and May 31.

New this year - the Challenge has been upgraded to include a second prize.  The team that has the highest percentage increase of former athletes giving from the previous year will win a $5,000 prize (please note the same team cannot win both prizes).  This initiative is sponsored by the all-new Varsity H Club.

Under the umbrella of the Pride Club, the Hofstra Varsity H Club is comprised of former Hofstra student-athletes and exists to provide support for Hofstra Athletics and to encourage camaraderie among its alumni letter winners.

To become a member of the Varsity H, you must be a former Hofstra student-athlete who contributes $25 or greater to the sport or athletic fund of your choice.
