Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra women’s soccer team captured the first Former Athlete Participation Challenge and won the $10,000 prize for their program. Women’s Soccer dominated the competition having 77% of their former athletes make a gift to support the program. The team finished with 897 points after 63 gifts were received online. Volleyball came in second place with 268 points and 25% of their alumnae giving. Men’s Lacrosse had the most alumni give to their program, receiving 104 gifts from former student-athletes.
More than 160 former athletes joined the Pride Club during the six weeks of the participation challenge. Of those gifts, 118 were received through GoHofstra.com. The second participation challenge will begin in September 2010.
The challenge encouraged former Hofstra athletes to support current Hofstra student-athletes by joining the Pride Club. The sport with the highest percentage of participation received $10,000 toward their program. For more information about scoring, please see below.

About the Former Athlete Participation Challenge:
The Former Athlete Participation Challenge pits each team against each other in a unique form of competition to determine which program can earn the most points by May 31. The team with most points will receive $10,000 given by an anonymous donor to support this initiative.
Points are earned in two ways. 1. The percentage of alumni giving will be multiplied by 1000. Example: 100 former athletes who have made a gift of $25 or more out of 500 former-athletes= .2x1000 = 200 points. 2. As an added bonus an additional two points can be earned for each gift made online by a former athlete between now and May 31.
To qualify a former student-athlete must make a gift of $25 or more by May 31.
