Troy, AL - Blake Martz, J.R. Myers and T.J. Rivera each drove in three runs, while starter Shane McCain scattered three hits over six shutout innings as the Trojans took game two of a three game series, 22-2, over the Pride Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. Troy improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Pride drop to 0-2.
The Trojans would score all they would need in the bottom of the first off Pride freshman starter Cody Normand (North Kingstown, RI), plating five runs in the stanza. Chad Watson led off with a singe and stole second. After Steven Rosado was hit by a pitch, Miles Hoyle launched a ground-rule double to score Watson. Rosado and Hoyle would then score on a throwing error for a 3-0 Troy lead. After a single and a strikeout, Adam Bryant drove in two more runs with a double to right center for a 5-0 lead. Normand was then able to get out of the inning by inducing two flyball outs.
But after a 1-2-3 top of the second, Troy tacked on four more runs. Watson started things again with a leadoff singe and then stole second. Rosado walked and after a Hoyle strikeout, Ryan Ditthardt poked a single through the left side of the infield to score Watson. Chase Whitley was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Martz then delivered a two-run single to make it 8-0 in favor of the Trojans. Troy would score their fourth run of the inning on a balk.
Troy would eventually build a 19-0 lead after scoring three times in the fourth, four times in the fourth and three times in the sixth. Rivera provided the big blow in the fifth with a three-run home run off Drew Liebert (Baltimore, MD), while Myers cracked a three-run shot in the sixth off of Pride reliever Sean Monaghan (East Meadow, NY).
Hofstra broke through on the scoreboard in the seventh as pinch-hitter E.J. Smith (Bethpage, NY) led off with a single and went to third on an Ethan Paquette (West Burke, VT) double. Scott A'Hara (Downingtown, PA) drove home Smith with an RBI groundout. Hofstra would tack on an unearned run in the eighth after John Kenny (Franklin Sqaure, NY) came in to score on an error.
Troy tacked on three more runs in the eighth to finish the scoring.
McCain allowed three hits, no walks and struck out three to earn the win in his college debut. Normand allowed seven hits and eight earned runs in his debut for the Pride. Freshman Jared Hammer (Flemington, NJ) had two hits for the Pride, including a double.
The series concludes Sunday at Noon (ET) with the Pride sending junior Kevin Rigopoulos (Athol, MA) to the hill. Troy counters with senior Andrew Dickinson.
