Hempstead, NY (Nov. 18) - Hofstra will host one of three consolation brackets for the 2009 Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off on Monday and Tuesday, with Charlotte, Elon and Yale also visiting the Mack Sports Complex.
On Monday, Yale will face Charlotte at 4:30 p.m., followed by Hofstra against Elon at 7 p.m. The doubleheader on Tuesday will see Yale and Elon meet each other at 4:30, with Hofstra facing Charlotte at 7 p.m.
Hofstra nearly advanced to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden, but dropped a 76-67 decision to No. 12 Connecticut on Tuesday. The Pride led by nine points with just over 9:00 remaining (54-45) and trailed by just one point with a minute to go, before UConn sealed the game at the foul line down the stretch.
Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) had 25 points for the Pride in the UConn loss, 21 of which came in the second half. Senior guard Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY) added 18 points on a career-high tying six three-pointers, which was one shy of the single-game school record.
The Pride also defeated Yale in the opening round of the NIT on Monday 68-63 behind 19 points from junior guard Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY). Charlotte and Elon played in the opening round at Duke, with Charlotte capturing a 75-61 win.
Hofstra and Charlotte recently played a home-and-home series with each team defending its home court. The 49ers won the season-opener in 2006-07 at Charlotte 88-82, with Hofstra bouncing back to take the rematch at the Mack Sports Complex in 2007-08 by a 70-68 final, behind 30 points from former guard Antoine Agudio. Hofstra and Elon will be meeting for the first time.
