ATH: Banda, Hughes Attend CAA SAAC Leadership Summit

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University student-athletes Felicia Banda (women's cross country) and Michael Hughes (wrestling), and Director of Student-Athlete Services and Life Skills Development Rachelle Fabre attended the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Leadership Summit in Boston, Massachusetts, this past Sunday and Monday hosted by Northeastern University.

One male and one female student-athlete leader from each member institution attended the summit, along with 10 campus SAAC advisors and CAA National SAAC Representative Derek Trott from the College of William and Mary. Also joining the discussion was CAA Commissioner Joe D'Antonio, CAA Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Condaras and CAA Director for Compliance & Student-Athlete Services Donna Jones.

"The CAA SAAC Leadership Summit is a great experience for our student-athletes," said Hofstra Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. "I am pleased that Felicia, Michael and Rachelle attended the Leadership Summit and were able to participate in several outstanding workshops, and partner with other SAAC representatives from around the conference to address the key issues that pertain to college athletics."

The first day of the summit was held in the Cabot Center on the Northeastern campus. Following an introduction period, Frank McPhee, an account executive for Boston Globe Media Partners and a former Northeastern student-athlete, spoke to the group about his student-athlete experience and life after college athletics. Ben Graves, founder/CEO of Stacked Sports and Alex Sutton, chief technology officer at Stacked Sports, followed McPhee with a presentation of their web-based app that helps student-athletes build a stronger and more impactful brand on social media. The student-athletes left knowing how to build a presence that is appealing to coaches, employers and future endorsement opportunities.

The final day of the event was held in Matthews Arena, where the student-athletes and advisors discussed "Hot Topic" issues as a group. The attendees were also challenged to develop ideas to help enhance the "student-athlete experience." The Leadership Summit concluded with the student-athletes recording a CAA Sportsmanship video.
