Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University has been selected to serve as host for the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals from 2019 through 2022, the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Committee announced Tuesday.
Previously, Hofstra was selected to host NCAA Men's Quarterfinals in 2017 and 2018. This year's edition will take place on May 20, 2017. The 2017 Quarterfinals at Hofstra will mark the ninth time the University has hosted this prestigious event.
Since the NCAA has gone to two predetermined sites this will mark the first time an institution has hosted in six consecutive years.
James M. Shuart Stadium will host one of the two quarterfinal doubleheaders on Saturday, May 18, 2019, Saturday, May 16, 2020, Saturday, May 22, 2021 and Saturday, May 21, 2022.
"Today's announcement by the NCAA is a testament to the popularity of lacrosse on Long Island and the surrounding regions, Hofstra's outstanding on-campus venue and the commitment from our staff and the entire University community in making the Quarterfinals a first-class experience for the student-athletes, coaches, fans and media," commented Hofstra Vice President and Director of Athletics
Jeffrey A. Hathaway. "We are thrilled to bring four great teams to James M. Shuart Stadium in each of the next six years for exciting NCAA lacrosse action. We're very proud that the NCAA and lacrosse world recognizes Hofstra as a premiere location for the quarterfinal games."
"We are thrilled that Hofstra has been chosen for an additional four years of hosting the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals," commented Hofstra Head Men's Lacrosse Coach
Seth Tierney. "James M. Shuart Stadium is one of the premier lacrosse venues in all of America and we are honored to showcase it to the lacrosse world on a yearly basis. Thank you to the NCAA for choosing Hofstra University and Shuart Stadium and we look forward to hosting the Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals for the next six years."
James M. Shuart Stadium is the largest outdoor sports complex on Long Island. Opened in 1963, it has served as the site for NCAA Championships, New York State High School Championships, world championships and professional contests.
James M. Shuart Stadium has been an important venue in NCAA Lacrosse history as it served as the site of the first-ever NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship game in 1971, which saw Cornell post a 12-6 victory over Maryland. Since then Shuart Stadium has hosted first round NCAA Tournament games in 1973, 1993 and 2006, and NCAA Quarterfinals in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2011 and 2014.
The four largest crowds in Shuart Stadium history occurred during the hosting of the NCAA Lacrosse Quarterfinals. The 2014 NCAA Quarterfinal crowd of 13,519 is the third largest attendance in NCAA Division I history and the largest-ever lacrosse crowd on Long Island. In 2011, 13,447 watched the NCAA Quarterfinals at Hofstra while a then-NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal record of 12,292 witnessed the 1999 NCAA Quarterfinals. A crowd of 11,259 watched the 2009 Quarterfinals while 10,510 fans attended the 2001 Quarterfinals. Hofstra-hosted Quarterfinals hold four of the top nine spots as best attended Quarterfinals in NCAA history.
In addition, advancing through the NCAA Quarterfinals hosted at Hofstra has been a good luck charm for one of the four participants. The eventual national champions have come through the NCAA Quarterfinals in Hempstead, New York in six of the previous eight quarterfinals hosted by Hofstra.
The 2017 Division I men's lacrosse quarterfinals will be split between James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, New York, on the campus of Hofstra University and the University of Delaware Stadium in Newark, Delaware. In 2018, two quarterfinals games will be held again at Hofstra, while the other quarterfinals matchups will be at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
